New Grad Nursing Programs

Hi everyone!

I am a nursing student in San Diego and am about to graduate at the end of July. I have my heart set on starting out in pediatrics, but have been looking all over the country and am not finding new grad openings. I am willing to move pretty much anywhere and take any nursing job, including adult med surg, to get that first year or so of experience, but I LOVE peds and would do anything for a peds job. If anyone knows of a children's hospital that is hiring new grads, please let me know! I know new grads are very expensive to train and are probably a nuisance to the experienced nurses, but we have to start somewhere! So...if anyone knows of any children's hospitals that are willing to take on newbies, please let me know. THANK YOU!!!

try children's medical center of dallas. they will have internship starts on Sept 2010. i just received email notifications about hiring new grads.

Something to think about ... Some hospitals may have available positions for new grads but hesitate to give them to someone moving to that city only for the job. The hospital may believe (perhaps correctly) that the new grad will get a little experience and then quit -- move back to where you came from, closer to family and friends, etc. and use that experience to get a job at your local hospital. The hospital will probably be more likely to give those jobs to people with roots in their community and/or who appear to likely to stay in that community for several years.

Because that is the case, you might want to focus your search in areas where you have family or friends ... and where you can present yourself as someone who has real reasons to put down roots in that community and become a long-term resident.

Children's hospital in Birmingham, AL has some positions for new grads with BSNs. I don't know all of the details, but they have info on their website about it in the nursing section.

In the San Antonio area the children's hospitals here hire new grads and place them in intern programs.

Did you find a job yet? If not, I've been researching new grad positions as well and know that in SD, Palomar Medical center has a new grad Peds/NICU program in January and in July/August. Here is the website: RN Residency Program for Magnet Recognized Health System | PPH

Also, Rady's Children's Hospital has a new grad program in July. UCSD Medical Center also has a new grad program in January and July (apply 3 months ahead of time). They don't have a peds. program, but have L&D/Infant special care. Hope this helps..

If you did end up finding a job already, let us know!
