New Grad - BMT

Congratulations, and thanks for posting this! I transferred to BMT last year, and as you mentioned, a lot of the threads were outdated when I was looking for BMT info here on AN. I love the unit - though I feel like I still have tons to learn.. It would be great to get a fresh thread going. Good luck with NCLEX!

Thank you! I would love to hear more about your unit, if you feel like sharing! I'm not entirely sure what to expect. I had a few offers on the table, but this was my final interview and I really connected with the unit director and feel of the unit. I don't start for a few months, so any and all information is welcome!

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so far. Where did you transfer from? As I understand it, BMT offers tons of opportunities to grow, which is what I was looking for.

I'm a new grad working in GenPeds/BMT units so I don't have much to share at this point! Only 6months in so far. But very interested in following this thread and learning from others! My experience so far is that it has been tough watching kids go through long hospitals stays and the multiple side effects. It's been a tough couple weeks for the floor so hoping to see more good outcomes than bad in the future! I really like switching between GenPeds and BMT it's nice to see pts (w typical childhood illness/injury etc) recover quickly and go home!

I'm not a new grad, all my experience is in regular oncology, but I just accepted a per diem position in a stem cell/organ transplant unit. I'm very excited because the hospital and unit sound amazing. So I'm almost like a new grad since I'll be learning what the process is like on the other side of the oncology spectrum.

Congrats! When do you start? That's incredibly exciting. How does a per diem position work? You can apply to other hospitals and be staffed when they need you?

I start when my background check clears and finish the usual HR paperwork. I work full time at hospital #1 and my per diem position is at #2. Once I finish orientation, I sign up for shifts that fit into my schedule at #2. Typically per diem nurses are first to float so its better to schedule yourself on lower staffed days.

But keep in mind, depending on which Institution you work at, policies and procedures will obviously vary. There are also different levels of care among BMT units. There are straight BMT units, BMT stepdown/telemetry units, and BMT ICU's.

I have read the entire thread. I'm mostly looking to conntect with people currently and get some discussion going. The thread is incredibly helpful, but folks have different experiences, and people who are active on the forum now would be able to respond back and forth. :)

Thanks for your input! I gravitated toward my unit because it seems like the nurses are well respected - that's the kind of learning environment I was looking for..The patient ratio is 3:1 and although it's not classified as an ICU, patients are rarely sent out of the unit/cared for elsewhere. I'm looking forward to seeing it in action and becoming a part of the team.
