New to CM

Hello, everyone!

I am a home health RN (BSN) at a very small, new, home health agency. My DoN recently asked if I'd be interested in being the Case Manager, only part time at first, until we build up a larger census. (We're sitting at about 25 right now.) My initial response was to turn it down, which I did, but after discussing it with DH, decided that I'd give it a try. Problem is, I really don't know anything about CM and my DoN isn't exactly fond of orientation. Her plan is generally a trial-by-fire method, which does provide an excellent foundation of what-not-to-do. I catch on quick, so after my first OASIS admit have not had any problems, but I'd like to know a bit more about what I'm doing and am clearly going to have to find the information on my own. Is the Case Management Education certificate from American Institute of Healthcare Professionals any good? It looks to be relatively comprehensive, is a start-anytime program with two years to complete, and most importantly it's affordable. Any other suggestions?

I'm not familiar with the program you referenced... I did hit the link, and checked it ouot.. Most of the places are going to want CCM for what you are doing, I would suspect. Don't get me wrong, I imagine the course material is very relevant, and may help you. But you have to keep in mind what employers are looking for in terms of certification. Before I spent a bucket o money, I'd recommend a sit down with the DON ( who isn't much for orientation), and ask more questions about the role, what it will involve etc. I can't imagine someone asking you to assume a new role, with no expectations outlined. Hope that helps somewhat.
