Networking website for my class

Hi all!

In my school, my cohort takes pretty much all our classes together. There are a lot of emails sent and announcements to be made, so I was wondering if anyone had a good idea for a (free) website where we could set up some kind of message board/messaging system to send things back and forth to each other. And get the instructors access too, if they'd like it to address the class. If I can't find anything else, I may set something up through Facebook - it's the only thing that comes close to what I'm thinking of.

There's some bickering and other juvenile stuff going on, so I'm hoping that at least if a few of the offenders get involved in a very no-pressure sort of environment, they'll be more likely to bring the positive vibes back to class.

Any ideas?

What about something like yahoo messenger? I know you can send pics instantly, but I'm not sure about files. Maybe with google messenger you can, I haven't used either in a while.

Yahoo Groups or Google Groups may be good. They allow for file storage as well as instant notification that files are posted. You can also schedule files to be delivered weekly/monthly, etc. You can also have tight control over who can access it. Google has more of a website feel to it than Yahoo so that might be better for your needs.

Best of all, you can control who can and can't post to it--you can even moderate any member's messages so you can cut off any bickering before the rest of the group sees it.

I'd also recommend Google Groups. They're easy to set up, administer and you can have a forum, file area, links area, etc.

Peace,
