NeoFax Question

Hey Everyone,

I'm trying to make a cheat sheet of common medications that are compatible with TPN for my own reference.

I was looking up medications like gentamicin and caffeine in the neofax but don't see TPN or trophamine mentioned by name on either the compatibility or incompatibility list. Now I know in the NICU we run gentamicin and caffeine concurrently with TPN.

I just wanted to know: if compatibility is not mentioned specifically in the neofax, is it generally assumed that they ARE compatible?

If not, where would I find this information?

Hey Everyone,

I'm trying to make a cheat sheet of common medications that are compatible with TPN for my own reference.

If not, where would I find this information?

Also, if something is compatible with D10W is it usually compatible with TPN?

Your pharmacy should have a source other than neofax. Usually if there is no information it is considered a no. We also use the peds drug handbook.

And plain D10 is different than TPN as you know. The med may not jive with one of the components.

TPN is usually D10 (or higher or lower) PLUS a multitude of ingredients. . . So no, you cannot assume the same compatibilities. Make contact with your friendly pharmacist. And don't assume unit practice is safe. We gave amp through TPN for years. It clouded up off and on and finally someone asked a question and the issue was clarified: it cannot be assumed to be compatible.
