negotiating salary

Hi all, my current contract is up for renewal, I have been with the same place for 2 years and have not yet received a pay raise, I am not good at negotiating and need some advice on how to approach management about this. I am pretty much locked in for the next few years since I took NHSC repayment. So any advice is appreciated

Ok, I'll try. First ask (in your own way) "are you satisfied with my performance? What could I do to improve over the next year?" Assuming you get a positive response, go straight out an ask for what you want. "I feel I have made good progress in my job here. Would it be fair to ask for an increase in compensation?" Using the phrase "be fair" whenever you are asking for something helps a lot. No one wants to be 'unfair'. Try to get the other party to mention a number first, if you ask you will never know what they were prepared to give. If possible get some ammunition from coworkers as to what to expect, if you think it will help.

Good luck.
