Needs advice on a job!

Published

I am a senior in high school, graduating in May, and interested in nursing. I am in the process of finishing my admission requirements for a college. Anyway, I needed a job, I applied lots of different places. Finally, I got a job at a college in my town (not the one I am planning to go to) I work in the dining services, doing dishline and serving mostly college students.

Before I got the job, I applied at a nursing home also in town as a dietary aide. I needed a job quickly and now the nursing home called me today saying I need to call back for an interview. I don't know what to do.

At the college, employees and managers are nice, only get paid minimum wage, and I get paid once a month. It's obviously closed during Thanksgiving break for one week and Christmas break for three weeks.

At the nursing home, I did hear the managers or people aren't very nice, I would wear srcubs, get paid over $9 an hour, but I am not sure when I would get paid.

I thought before, working at a nursing home would give me experience and such about nursing. But would being a dietary aide do such that? Prepare me for college/the future? I don't know if I should work both jobs...the college is real flexible for other jobs, school, sports, and activities. Or quit the college and just work at the nursing home, or if I should just continue working at the college's dining services. I honestly don't know what I'd actually do as a dietary aide. I just thought being in the healthcare type setting would help? Because I think it's more nutrition type stuff maybe. Any advice on what to do would be great! Thanks so much!

Dietary aide can be passing the trays picking them up, passing the menu, cleaning the kitchen, or assisting the residents. If you are planning to go into nursing then nursing home job would be a better option for you also nursing schools want to see what have you done prior to applying for school. Nursing home will give you an insight of what really goes on, it would be a good exp.

I think there is no harm in going for the interview and seeing what happens. Meet the staff and ask for a tour of the nursing home so you can see where you would be working and kind of get a feel for the facility. Following the interview, if they make you an offer than you can decide which place you want to work at. Nursing home experience would be good for you if nursing is where you want to be. I worked in a long term care facility while in college and it really gave me good nursing experience. Good luck!! :)

Thanks guys! I thought it over and just called, set up an interview at 4 on Tuesday. It seems like a good job, getting the experience and such, I am just nervous about the managers or people. I've heard not so good things. Even the girl on the phone didn't seem as nice as she should've been, I think. I really think it would be a good job for me but I don't know yet. I have no idea what to do and I called because I don't want to regret not even calling back. So I'll see what happens. Thanks for the input!!

yes I would do the nursing home job good experience and after 1-2 semesters of actual nursing classes most times you can take the states cna exam (without the cna class) your school can usually sign a paper take the cna test pass and maybe transfer to being a cna at the nursing home for even better experience. you need experience to land job now and days
