Needlesticks

A few questions on needlesticks:

How many have you had?

How long have you been a nurse?

What was the situation in which they occured?

Just curious and hoping to get some new insight on how they can happen!

My answer: I had one while I was still in nursing school. It was a Vit K injection I had just prepared in L&D and I dropped the needle (before it was dirty!). It somehow went perpendicular to my leg..through my scrubs and stabbed me in the knee.

I was preparing to give a patient an injection of Risperdal Consta and was changing the needle to a smaller needle, and stuck myself with the clean (thank the GODS) needle I had just taken off the syringe. The funny thing was the needle was already primed when I realized I needed to change it (the guy had lost a TON of weight) and some of the medication must've made its way into me because I felt funny that day!

I think I was just in too much of a hurry. I have since slowed WAY down with needles because it very well could've been a dirty needle.
