Needle Phobia

Hi, i'm a 3rd year nursing student and have a phobia of needles. I can give injections but when it comes to drawing blood or IV insertion I get very faint. The last time I passed out after attempting to start and IV. I'm really dedicated to the profession so I would hate this fear to get in my way after so much hard work. Has anyone overcome this situation? Any advice?

sounds more like your phobia is of blood rather than needles. No I do not share quite this experience. I have a fear of sticking myself though. Sorry I cannot offer any advice, but if you look at it as no longer having a fear of the needles now, does that help any? Perhaps the more you do, the desensitized to them you'll become.

You can always find a job that has their own IV teamt...that was just the 1st thought that came to my mind.

But seriously, I think once you start working you will be on such a rush/high to get everything done on time and properly documented your needle phobia will be a minor minute of your day, you will do what needs done and move on.

FYI I despise sputum of any sort. Of course who was the 1st pt I ever got in clinicals? someone with CF. and one of the 1st things my mentor nurse had me do? Empty the suction container...eewwwaaa. You do what you have to do.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeww yeah, that's gross!! Luckily I don't have a prob w/ suctioning. And I never had to empty the container! Blech! :barf01:

Although I had no phodia, I never liked putting in IV's while in school. I now work at a major hospital w/ it's own IV team so it's no issue.

I have a coworker who absolutely hates giving IM's. She does it when she absolutely has to, but usually asks another nurse to do it for her.

As the prevoius poster said, the more you do it, the less of a big deal it will become. I think that every nurse has something that makes her/him quesy.....(tonight I was scraping poop out from under a pts fingernails - yuck!)

Ewwwaaaa I have had to do that before, thanks for bringing back the fond memory!!!!

Another thing that totally grosses me out are dagger like long yellow nasty-crusty toe nails....eeessshhh...I am almost afraid to check pedal pulses on those folks...

I think every grandchild in the US should stop buying thier grandparents candy and flower vases and instead get them pedicure gift certificates!!

I am first year and the exact same way. i havt had to do my 1st stick but i tryy to watch all i can but it is still bothering me...any more advice?
