Need nurses' point of views

Published

I am a nursing student, and it's becoming more aware to me that I could have chosen the wrong major. Nursing has been the only thing to ever interest me or make me feel like I would be doing something worth while; however, in my past experience I do NOT do well with long shifts or not getting enough sleep. I tend to have panic attacks more easily and my menstural cycles get all out of whack:eek:(sorry males) when I am sleep deprived. When I look at other majors, nothing seems interesting. Is there any way that nursing could work for me??

Nobody can answer that queston except you. I gotta ask, how old are you? You sound on the younger side, pretty unsure of yourself or what you are capable of. Nursing is a good career choice, but obviously its not for everybody. If one of your primary motivations is to help people then you are a good way there.

Do some soul searching but don't cut yourself short, long days come with many jobs, but many jobs don't come with the satisfaction that a good day as a nurse will bring.

Do not limit your options. Not all nurses (LPN/LVNs or RNs) work 12 hr shifts in acute care. The profession of nursing offers a variety of job opportunities. You can work in: acute care, skilled nursing, rehab, home health, public health, private duty, assisted living, case management, clinics, dialysis, blood banks, schools and teaching. Some nurses work 8 hr shifts five days a week and some nurses work per diem or part time.

If you have an interest and it fits the parameters of your time, health, and energy, follow up to see if there is a fit.

Most doctor's offices work on a 8-5 schedule so that is an option. You will probably have to do clinicals that last 12 hrs though.

If you can make it through the school, life will be better on the other side. There are MANY MANY options after school, some with a regular 40 hour work week in private practice and things like that. There's hope after school. School is the hardest part
