Need ideas for community based project

For my last BSN clinical, I am going to be starting a program that will be directed at anyone who lives in my city. I have decided that one session of this program will be dedicated to nutrition. I'm thinking i'll probably be presenting to 10-15 people and i plan on using power point and hand outs. So far i've come up with doing something with the food pyramid and doing something in regards to the formula about how many calories to eat a day to maintain/lose weight. If anyone has any interesting ideas or has done something like this and would like to share resources...it would be much appreciated.

I think if you look at your population you can come up with lots of great ideas instead of the food pyramid...no offense but that is not very stimulating

crisis in this country involves diabetes and heart disease

maybe preventative eating happens to prevent either or both since they are so interrelated?

low sugar/ low fat meals or desserts

maybe talk about splenda and how to incorporate it into everyday life

increase fiber?

alternatives to salt

maybe compare a fast food meal vs something quick to make at home

hope this helps

Good one. And include some quick and easy (and healthy!) recipes :)

We did something similar for ours. We targeted a retirement community with an average age of 75. We included the food pyramid and mapped out a "personalized" plan for m/f of the average age. Our main presentation included the importance of hydration, fall prevention and causes of & natural remedies for constipation. This sounds very dull but you would be suprised at the interest, especially in regards to constipation and hydration. We spoke about these in regards to the aging process and SEs of meds, etc, and how it all interacts/relates. We had a pretty good turnout of people and they had lots of questions, as suprising as that sounds.

We held a raffle to make it more "fun". We asked a local drug store if they would sponser this raffle and they provided $500 worth of merchandise that related to the things we were talking about.

Just some ideas that worked well for our group. Good luck!!

whatever did you decide to present on. We are curious.

I ended up having a partner for this project. We ended up doing a health and wellness program for the faculty and staff at Miami University (ohio). We focused our attention on nutrition, activity, and stress management. We based our findings on the Transtheoretical Model: Stages of Change. We are continuing this project into our capstone summer class where we will be launchinn our own website thru Miami called Healthe-U. I will post a like when we get it finished. It ended up being kinda cool.:nurse::wink2::nurse:
