Hi I am a new nurse and I have been working on a medical ICU for the past three months. I have come to realize that I do not think critical care is for me. So my question is what should I try after this? I always thought I would be a critical care nurse so now I have no idea what to do. I would like to do something that still uses some of my nursing skills and thinking, but maybe something not as stressful as an ICU.
thank you!!!!

I would look on your internal website and see what jobs are available. Usually, it is a 6 month period of time before you can transfer. You can certainly see what would be of interest to you. With that being said, there is little in acute care that is not stressful.
ICU would be my worse nightmare....well that and cardiac, which is so not my thing either. But I LOVED the ER. Now I am completely out of acute care and I think I hit pay dirt. 6 or 7 years ago, I couldn't imagine NOT being in acute care.
You have tried it. It is not for you. You may enjoy the ER. You may enjoy a more long term skilled care or home health, where you can use the clinical aspects of what you do, without all the urgency.
Or you may want to switch it up all together, from palliative/hospice to school nursing, to even a women's health clinic.
Best wishes!
