need help with practice question

Not sure if this type of question will be on nclex, but I got it wrong on my practice test and don't understand why! (it's probably silly, but I'm so scared- 3 days till test!!)

Prioritze which items would be of most concern to a nurse visiting a childless couple (1 being the 1st priority & 4 being the lowest)

1. Household cleaners stored under the sink

2. Insulin syringes on the kitchen cabinet

3. Husband & wife's meds stored together on bedside table

4. 2 empty bottles of wine in trash bin.

My answer was- 3, 2, 4, 1

According to the book the answer is 3, 1, 2, 4

so....what am I not seeing here? Why would keeping cleaning products under the sink be in my top 2 concerns???

I agree with the book 3,1,2,4. Safety is always 1st. Just like the meds, the child can swallow cleaning products and cause harm to themselves.

I don't understand either since this is a childless couple. Mabye it is just wrong in the book.

LOL yeah I'm thinkin it's the book too. It also told me exliers contain medicinal agents dissolved in a concentrated solution of sugar- uh, NO!! Lord help me I take the nclex Monday- outside of my notes & textbooks, this is the only other study reference I have!:yldhdbng:

Your Question:

Prioritze which items would be of most concern to a nurse visiting a childless couple (1 being the 1st priority & 4 being the lowest)

1. Household cleaners stored under the sink

2. Insulin syringes on the kitchen cabinet

3. Husband & wife's meds stored together on bedside table

4. 2 empty bottles of wine in trash bin.

My Answer:

This is just how I see it.

1. First and foremost..just because the couple is childless doesn't mean there is no child at their home or there can never be a child at home.

2. To answer the question... for safety reasons... regardless of age wheteher it's a child, an adolescent or an adult.

I would still be concerned to see:

(3) The Husband & wife's meds stored together on bedside table: My own rationale: Because obviously it is within reach. Should be stored in a medicine cabinet regardless.

(2) Insulin syringes on the kitchen cabinet. My own rationale: Since they are childless I am assuming that the kitchen cabinet isn't locked or hasn't been "child-proofed". More importanly the syringes may actually have "insulin" in it. Most importantly, you would hope that this couple would put the syringe in a medicine cabinet and not in a kitchen cabinet.

(1) Household cleaners stored under the sink. My own rationale: same as above...the house may have not been child-proofed yet.

(4) 2 empty bottles of wine in trash bin. My own rationale: This last one isn't as important as the other ones but it is still is a concern. As pebbles had mentioned... for safety reasons.

Did I find the question tricky? when I've read it... Iwould say no.

Did I find the stem of the question easily? I would say Yes which is safety and age has nothing to do with the question or the couple having a child or not.

I hope I made sense...
