hi guys,

my name is joseph and i am a licensed nurse here in the Philippines. i just want to ask for your help regarding the process of taking the NCLEX RN. i dont know where and how to start. i know that i will be needing SSN before i can take the NCLEX, but my friend told me that there are some states that doesn't require SSN, like texas and virginia. how true is that?

thank your guys for your help. your reply is highly appreciated!

Hi Joseph,

Which state are you moving to? Check the website for the Board of Registered Nursing for that particular state and it should be able to provide you with a lot of information about the NCLEX and the process.

Ex for California, the site is Board of Registered Nursing

As for the SSN issue, i am not sure about that.

Hope that was helpful :)

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

You need to start by choosing a state where you wish to live and work. Then check the state board of nursing website for the requirements for licensing by examination as an internationally educated nurse. California requires a SSN as do many other states. Do you have work rights? Right now with retrogression the wait for an employment based visa for someone born in the Philippines is over 10 years now.

CA would not be a good example as the CA BRN has been enforcing the 1987 concurrency rules since Nov. 2011 and very few applicants from the Phils have been given the ATT or even those trying to endorse from another state.

This has greatly affected those grads and nurses from the Phils who obtained their nursing degree from 2004-2005 to present.

In CA, the SS# must be on any application, whether it's the first-time or if applying under the endorsement process, it's clearly stated in the CA application in BOLD lettering if no SS# is provided, it will be declined and face losing the non-refundable application fees.

The signature line appears just below the SS# disclosure so it should not be a surprise if one tries to claim a refund or why their application was rejected on that basis.
