Hey Everyone,

I am a new Grad and I have my first nursing interview tomorrow in the ER department and I was wondering in anyone could give me any advice, suggestions or possible interview questions?

Thanks!!

Specializes in LTC, ER.

i have had 2 interviews for e.r, got job offers for both. they want to know if you can take the pressure of the e.r. be able to relate instances where you overcame situations on the job that were less than optimal. even if it was a situation in clinicals that you can relate, that's good. i was able to relate working under extremely difficult conditions-i.e. a nurse for 40 residents in ltc on day shift. interviewers want to know that you are outgoing, that you won't have a problem dealing with an ethnically diverse patient population as well as coworkers. they want to know that you learn quickly and are eager to learn many new things-talk about how you want to take a foriegn language class in the future to better serve your community. you must convey that you work well with a team, because in e.r. if you can't work with a team, you won't make it.

And you should have questions too:

How long is orientation?

What shifts do new grads work? How many experienced RNs to new grads? (A biggie - you don't want a shift where you are all brand new grads).

WHat type of certs will be obtained during orientation? BLS, ACLS, a peds cert (either PALS or ENPC), a trauma cert (PHTLS or TNCC). This will give you a solid base of knowledge.

Good luck - the ER rocks!
