Hello all, hopefully I am posting in the right place, if not I apoligize in advance. I have considered going to nursing school for a while now, however I am concerned I would be denied a license because I suffer from aniexty/panic attacks...Also I have some past history of prescription drug abuse from a few years back, that is documented with my medical records. Would I be denied for any of this?
Thanks in advance for any insight on this matter.

I really don't think any of that would cause you to be denied a license. A criminal record on the other hand...
I've suffered from anxiety and depression for years and am medicated. It's never presented me with an employment problem yet.
Good luck :-)

Kelly,
I am assuming you want to earn your RN license. I don't know of any specific law(s) that would prevent you from becoming a nurse with a history of prescription drug abuse. However, all of this will depend on the state you are in and the age at which it happened. Additionally it would be a matter of whether or not the drug abuse was reflected on your criminal record. If this is limited to a medical history I doubt any organization or person could even see it due to HIPPA.
Here is what I know from my school. They will likely perform a background check before acceptance. At my school medical history is limited to immunization titers. Drug tests are standard. Nursing schools don't like law suits. They are going to mitigate any possibility of negligence on thier part by selecting students judiciously.
As for the anxiety. If it is a disorder, disturbing normal daily acitivity, you need to consider a few things. As a nusre you will be required to meet deadlines, follow detailed directions, memorize information, and analyze data. You will interact with angry, intoxicated, or violent people. You will be required to make important, possibly life changing, decisions in stressful enviroments. Think of situations you have been in requiring you to carry out similar tasks, how did you do? Shadow a nurse in the ER or at a clinic, depending on what you want to specialize in. Talk to other nurses and students. Chances are spending some time with us will either turn you off or on.
Cheers.
Thank you both for the input, I can handle stress pretty well as long as it doesnt involve any one I am close to. Any ideas on any good online schools that I can get some pre req's out of the way? I work full time and my hours vary from 800am to 900pm depending on the day. Tried looking for sat classes for a&p or intro to phy classes, but no luck. I took and passed med term years ago, but dont think that would even count for anything now...ugh

I suggest looking into local community colleges' online offerings. This would be the cheapest and easiest route to go. Local 4-year colleges may also have online courses, but will be a little pricier. :)
Thanks, here's the thing...my employer will pay 100% for any pre req's I take, my problem in time to take them because of my shifts. So anyone know of any reputable online colleges that offer the pre req'a I would need to enter the nursing program later. I would like to get something out of the way, especially since they will pay for it . My fear is that I use the wrong online college, and my credits wont count for anything

A lot of community colleges offer online classes. Or you can call the nursing school you eventually plan to attend and ask which school they recommend to transfer from.
