Need some experienced nurses to help solve this problem

I have a post turp patient who's foley wont drain independently into the drainage bag. If you unhook the tubing it will drain freely, hook it to a leg bag it drains. It has been irrigated no clots where present, bag has been changed. Cannot figure this out any nurses out there ever encountered this?

is there an antireflux valve?

I have had lots of issues with catheters. My company uses two brands of bags- bard and kendall. The bard have a better reflux valve which actually makes it worse at draining urine that has any sediment. The kendalls drain much better. We also have had better results irrigating with acetic acid- it seems to break down the sediment in the urine if that is an issue.

How long ago was this procedure done? Usually after the TURP, the catheter stays in

place for just a few days. The fact that you mention no clots, and urine flowing freely

with just a leg bag suggests that maybe it's time to start bladder training and remove.

He may be able to void on his own. WIth the urinary collection bag in place, placement to gravity

places a risk for pulling which may be causing tension and pressure within the urethra, pressure

on the healing prostate gland, thus

causing temp blockage of urine. Try taping the catheter in place or use a velcro strap(patch) to hold

tubing in place. If this does not work, keep the leg bag on and teach the pt to empty more freq.

Hopes this helps.
