hi!!
i'm feeling blue today. i've been a nurse for 3 years and i still feel so incompetent. when i'm at work, i feel like i'm not a good nurse. i'm just not good with recognizing abnormals with patients, and when a nurse from the next shift finds abnormalities and calls doctor, i wonder why i couldnt have realized it and feel so incompetent. i'm also worried about getting fired from my job for my incompetence. my boss already fired one nurse after she hired more new nurses and i wonder if its going to happen to me also. i have worked in nursing home for 3 years and never worked in the hospital. do you think i can improve my nursing skills if i worked in the hospital? thanks for any advices.

Continuing Education is one way to go. I have been an RN for 12 years and have worked on a very busy 47 bed ortho and general post-op floor. We also take overflow from just about everywhere else in the house. I work night shift and still learn at least one new thing each shift. Beside CE, I have learned a great deal from asking questions of more experienced RN's. The thing that I like most about my current unit is that all of us routinely consult each other about difficult cases (Within privacy regulations)
When we get a new grad or a float, everyone tries to make the effort to mentor them. As a result we have a reputation as a good solid team of skilled nurses and cna's. My advice is to use in service offerings, ceu's and more experienced colleagues as resources. Good Luck
