need advice!

Published

Hi, I'm a college student(now sophomore) :)

I always needed someone to ask for advice for nursing.

and I'm glad that I found this website!!

ANYWAY..

I'm confused between art and nurse.

Since I was little, my dream job has been to to do art(specifically make animations) and have been studying for it.

But I couldn't go to art college because of money issues..

and now I'm taking courses to get into nursing school.

I have been thinking that I can do art after I make money with nursing.

But I keep thinking of trying art colleges these days...because I'm not sure whether I will be able to do art while working as a nurse.

I always wanted to do what I like and find meanings in it. However, the reality is harsh...money IS important issue as well.

Should I continue nursing and then do art? Is it even possible to work as a nurse and study for art in college?

Or should I try for art schools now and transfer?

I don't see why you can't combine the two.

Animation can be used for patient and staff education, for example.

There are a lot of people here who have a knack for creative, entrepreneurial ideas... there are bound to be ways to use both nursing and art to start your own business. I'd love to see what they come up with :)

If were you I would get my nursing degree first. You'll have that as your ace in the hole, and you can still pursue your art career.

I have a distant relative who is a medical illustrator.

I also know nurses who use art in their teaching and research.

It is very possible to combine the two interests.

However, I saw nothing in your post that indicated a true interest in nursing. Unless you have a least a little interest in being a nurse (for the sake of being nurse), you will probably not be very happy with nursing school or a nursing job. While the money is a legitimate consideration, if it is your ONLY reason for choosing nursing, you may end up miserable. Nursing is a very tough job and the working conditions are often not very good. If you have little interest in actually being a nurse, you may not be willing to endure the difficulties of the career. The money alone may not be enought if you are miserable.

So ... why not pursue your artistic dreams from the beginning? Yes, you may have to struggle with the financial issues. But if you have a "true calling" for art, then you should be able to endure the financial hardships for a while until you find a way to earn a living at it.
