NCLEX Question

Published

Hello All,

Is it possible to take the NCLEX exam before I graduate NS? I heard from a former student that some of the people in her class took the boards before they graduated (and also had a job lined up), so that could start working immediately upon graduation.

If it is possible to do so, how realistic is it that I will pass on the first try?

Thanks for any help or insight! Much appreciated!

Maybe the have not gone through the graduation ceremony or officially graduated but have completed and passed all classes. That would be the only way they would qualify for seating pass for NCLEX.

Were you a good student in school? I would say then it is highly likely you will pass on the 1st try. Remember around 88% of first time testers pass the NCLEX. It is measuring minimum ability to practice safetly.

Bottom line, In my nursing class all the good students passed and even some of the borderline ones did. Only a few students failed and they strugged all the way through school.

Thank you so much for the information. I also under the impression that you could not take the Boards until all classes were completed, which is why I was surprised when she (the former student) said that her classmates took the NCLEX before graduation.

I am still in NS, but consider myself to be a good student. I have a 3.8 overall GPA and am entering my 3rd semester. Since I am funding my education solely by myself, I take my education VERY seriously. I try to study or take practice exams every day when time permits. I hope that my dedication to my studies will pay off in the end (ie. passing the Boards). :wink2:

I just graduated in may from a BSN program and my GPA was 3.0 and I recently took the NCLEX had 75 qs and passed on the first try.... Don't rely on good grades in NS school a lot of ppl I know graduated with higher gpa than I did and they failed... you have to focus on question techniques... I read the entire Kaplan book and it helped A LOT! Once you understand the way questions are asked you'll do great. Good Luck with everything I'm sure you will do great:nurse::wink2:

No, you cannot take boards until after school is over. The BON needs proof of you attending NS before they allow you to test, and your school won't do that until after school is over.

You do sound serious and dedicated. I am sure you will have no problems on NCLEX. if you just remember that 88% of 1st time testers pass then that tells you most people pass the 1st time. And it's safety safety ABCs. Good luck!

Actually, this is possible. In my particular program (ADN) they allow you to take the NCLEX-PN after you have completed 3 semesters. You still continue on as normal with your curriculum, however you have the option to take the exam and work as an LPN while you finished the program.

That's different. Many programs offer the LPN route mid curriculum. That's not what we're talking about here.

We're talking about taking a program, and taking NCLEX before graduation.

You have to have graduated from NS before you can take the NCLEX. Plain and simple. This former nursing student is a liar. Well, maybe that's a little harsh, but he/she is "twisting the truth" a bit :)

I have only heard of one state that allows you to sit NCLEX before graduation and that is CA however they will not give permission unless the school (IN CA) has notified them with a list on who will be graduating and they will not release NCLEX results without transcripts from the school and a completed file.

Virginia allows students to sit for the NCLEX-RN before graduation, but you have to know your graduation date. I sat for boards a week before my actual graduation date (and passed on the first try with 75 questions). Check with your state BON to find out the requirements.

This is good to know because I live in CA! Thanks so much! I think I need to call the BRN directly here in CA and find out their policy!

Thanks again! :yeah:
