As we all know there are numerous NCLEX preparation programs and books out there to help prepare us for the exam. So I wanted to ask for some input regarding this, what worked for you?

I worked with several, not one predominantly. Mostly I was able to rely on what I learned in school to get by on the test. Don't believe one should let time go by between the learning phase in school and taking the NCLEX.

I primarily used LaCharity and Kaplan's online review. I didn't use most of the Kaplan review but I did do the diagnostic test and all 7(?) question trainers which I found very helpful. I also did a couple of videos that were walk throughs of answering questions which I found useful.
I had a ten year gap between graduation and the NCLEX and purchased many guides over the years including Saunders, Kaplan, LaCharity, Exam Cram, Pearson Vue, Princeton Review, Incredibly Easy to name a few of the more popular ones. Of those, Kaplan was my favorite and I disliked Saunders the most. LaCharity is the only one I picked up near exam time (along with Kaplan's online review) and is by far the most bang for the buck, lots of good practice for delegation questions in there.
My best advice is to spend some time learning about the NCLEX before you worry about studying for it. Not all review guides are created equal, but understanding what the NCLEX will ask you will help you figure out what guide will fit your needs best.
