My chances?

Published

Hey people,

So here's my situation:

My GPA is 3.06 and hopefully it'll be a bit more than that after this semester's grades are added to it.

I have all of the most generic prereqs done except one (Nutrition).

I applied to 2 nursing schools this spring (my first time applying), and got waitlisted to one and rejected

from the other.

I am of African origin, working full-time while going to classes part-time.

I live in Kansas City now, but I'd be willing to relocate to almost anywhere in the US to pursue my dream of

becoming a nurse. I'd love to hear all ideas that could help me in finding a school that would accept me. :)

Oh, and if anybody knows the average GPA to get into Howard University's nursing school, I'd love to hear

that as my husband has been accepted there, and would be nice to go to the same school with him.

Have a great day, ladies and gentlemen. :)

Hi,

The 3.06 GPA is quite low. You may have to consider finding an associates program near Howard. Perhaps if you do well in an associates program, you could segue into an RN/BSN program.

You have to find the way to pursue nursing if you really want it. There are numerous hurdles and obstacles, but if you really want it, you can find a way to get there.

I would try to look at schools that look at more than just GPA. I will be applying to Edison College in Fort Myers, FL for the evening program at the end of June. They give points for GPA, number of pre-reqs. completed, ACT composite and ACT reading. My GPA isn't great but I did good on the ACT. I already have a BA and would have loved to do an accelerated program but 1) my 3.0 GPA (from my previous degree) will NEVER let me in a program like that and 2) I have to work full time so I need an evening program. I will go for RN degree now and then just to RN to BSN online after I start working as a nurse.

I hope you can find something that will work. I believe you can get into a program with a 3.06 if you will just find the right system........good luck.

I'd look at community colleges. My cc only requires a C in prereqs and doesn't look at GPA beyond that . . . it's first come first served.

I think you should go for it. It doesnt't hurt to try. It is not impossible.

I didn't think I would get accepted, but I did.

I am sure Howard requires an essay and personal statements where you can set yourself apart and make them see you will be a valuable asset to the program!!

Good Luck!

Hey, thanks for the replies. Yeah maybe associates is the way to go first and then from RN to BSN.

Hey Agenyc, what school did you get accepted to?

Rahelina,

I got accepted to LIU ( Long Island University) Brooklyn Campus. very exiting!

Keep in mind that it is sometimes harder to get in to a cc because it is such a "good deal". I know at BMCC in NYC, you need a 3.9 or so to even have a snowballs' chance in hell (pardon the expression ..). A private school may be the way to go. Good Luck!
