Multi-state licensure?

Published

Hi Nurses,

I recently moved to AZ (a compact state) from WA state (NOT compact). My AZ license lasts for 4 years, my WA state license needs to be renewed every year. Do I need to keep my WA state license active, or do I let it lapse? Would I be able to transfer it back to WA if need be? I don't really want to move back to WA, but if anything were to happen, it is where I was born and raised, and all of my family are there.

Thanks in advance for your replies!!

The answer to your question is: it really depends on you and your situation. I for one have both the compact state and California state licenses, both of which I intend to keep active in case I need to move back to California. If you have no intention of practicing in WA state, then perhaps you don't need to keep it. The only drawback is you'll need to apply for it again if you ever find yourself wanting to go back to the Northwest.

P.S. It sucks that you have to renew it yearly.

It's entirely your choice whether or not you maintain your WA license. If it's not expensive and you have extensive family ties in WA (so you can envision situations where you might want or need to return at some point), it might be worth maintaining it. But, even if you let it lapse, you can always apply again in the future -- it's just a matter of how much they would charge you for a "new" application process and how long it would take (whereas, if you keep the license active, you're ready to work as soon as you set foot in the state).

If you can place it on inactive that would be better than letting it lapse. I did that for my Ohio License and all I had to do was turn in the CEU's and pay my money to reactivate. If you Lapse there may be more to do. Check with the WA state BON.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I think I will check with the WA BON about making my license inactive. Luckily, it doesn't need to be taken care of until May.
