how much is malpractice insurance

Per our professor, a personal friend of his (doc in Philly) pays $140 K. Yikes!

He's seriously considering relocating his practice to another state.

Can't blame him.

i also do nso for 89/year- i don't think our anesthesia insurance will even be close unfortunately, but i don't know.

Larry- if crna insurance even came close to 140k a year, I think the yearly income would be a defecit- I do realize that that quote was for an mda.

So my conclusions thus far is somewhere between 89/yr and 140k/yr. Anyone out there narrow this margin?

Malpractice insurance rates for CRNAs are different state to state. The higher premium states are generally those that do not have tort reform laws. I live in a tort reform state and pay over $6000/year for first year claims made insurance. In claims made insurance, it is necessary for you to pay a "tail" after you leave that insurance company. The tail covers you for claims made during the insurance period and usually about one year's premium.

It is a complicated topic. I would highly recommend that you contact AANA Insurance Services for the most complete and accurate information.

In my opinion, the reason for the difference between RN and CRNA rates is due to the fact that CRNAs get sued for malpractice, RNs rarely do.

does anyone know of any good statistics out there about number of cases vs claims? or asa status and claims? how about claim categories (for example dental injury).

thanks for your help, I am very curious. I figure I will eventually hear more about these topics at school.

If you do a medline search you will find abstracts of closed claim studies by the ASA and AANA.

I am uncomfortable posting specific information about lawsuits on any internet sites. There are many lawyers, consultants and others who may wish to use this information.
