Moving to Orlando...

Specializes in oncology/BMT & nursing education.

Hello allnurses!

My husband just accepted a position in the Orlando area - so we will be moving there within the next few months. I am a born and raised Pennsylvanian and have only been to the Orlando area once. I would like some input about the job market for RN's in the Orlando area. I have only been browsing through jobs, mainly Florida Hospital System and Orlando Health System.

My background is oncology/BMT, neuro critical care, and gyne. I see that Florida Hospital Orlando is a BMT center, anyone know anything about the unit or program? Any opinions on MD Anderson in Orlando? Also, I looked in Winnie Palmer since I have some background in gyne - anyone know of the scoop there.

Also, I have an MSN in nursing education. Currently, I teach clinicals for a BSN program and would like to continue this as I enjoy it. How are the job prospects for nurse educators in pre-licensure programs down there? I know where I live, there is NO shortage of educators!

Any other tidbits or useful information would be greatly appreciated! I am open to working at any hospital - community or academic medical center.

Thank you!

Stephanie

Hi thats a good idea, working in winnie palmer hospital is the best if you like gyne. :)

I cannot give you any info about the BMT unit, but can tell you that I did see a posting a few weeks back about a teaching position at UCF (University of Central Florida). Since I just graduated with my MSN and moved to Orlando, I have been looking at tons of sites, so I couldn't tell you exactly where I saw it. I guess you can try googling it. I have lived all over the state of Florida and love Orlando. My husband and I found a place right downtown and are so happy with our decision. We are close to Lake Eola that you can go walking, take your kids to the park if you have them, be there for festivities, and walk to many restaurants. It doesn't feel like a normal downtown, but more of a quaint downtown. Orlando is more than just Disney :)

You can always just submit your resume and cover letter to random oncologist offices too. I did that and actually did get a few interviews out of it, even though they did not have any jobs posted. Florida Hospital is HUGE downtown and Orlando Regional (ORMC) or whatever they call themselves now is also a large facility. ORMC is the level I trauma center for our area. I think they are pretty comparable, but Florida Hospital may be a little bigger, and they have the newer facility. I have never been to Winnie Palmer, but my sister-in-law just delivered her kid there and she really liked it. I've only here good things about MD Anderson, but the one in Texas; so I don't know anything about the one here.

I wish you luck and welcome you to Orlando when you come. You will LOVE it:lol2:

To add to what has already been written. I don't know what area of Orlando your husband is working in. My 2 oldest kids live in Oviedo...just over the county line from Orlando..very near UCF. It IS way more than Disney (even though my oldest son has worked lifeguard/lake patrol there for 3 years while still finishing his degree at UCF) they've both lived there for 6 years now. My daughter got her master's at UCF and works at the new UCF College of Medicine at Lake Nona. Be aware of tolls....she pays $100 a month getting to work and back. My son pays less because he takes I-4. In November they will be moving their separate ways so they can each be closer to their respective work places. I consider Orlando to be fairly easy to get around for a big city....but the tolls can be costly! (my contributing tidbit.)

My daughter said they are giving serious consideration to moving the Nursing school to Lake Nona in a few years. I'm not up on teaching positions or nursing jobs in Orlando (except the L&D areas of WP and FL Hospital (Altomonte) as I doulad clients at those hospitals. What I liked most about FL Hospital/Altomonte is that they are working toward their Baby Friendly Hospital initiative. They may have met their goals by now.

If you have any questions about the Orlando area in general ask away or PM me or email me. I'll be glad to help! :D I lived there for 6 months after daughter had radial reduction (Kienbocks) and we visit at least 4 times per year.
