Moving to NY after graduation

i am originally from new york but moved out of state temporarily for personal reasons. i'm attending nursing school in mississippi and plan on moving back home to ny after i graduate. i have 2 semesters left until i graduate with my adn. i have so many questions about how to transition to working in new york. i want to continue school for my bsn or msn. i am prepared to do what i have to do in order to get back to new york and make it among the other nurses up there.

my grades are good- currently a 3.5 i am involved with school activities and am vice president of our student nurses association, and the state treasurer of the student nurses assn. i am in the national honor society. i've already been accepted to an rn-msn program here in mississippi but i don't want to stay in state to attend. i have tried filling up my resume as best as i can so i would appear desirable to ny employers.

if the readers out there can answer any of these questions i would appreciate it so much!

1.

should i take the nclex in new york and get my license through nys?

2.

should i take the nclex in mississippi and work here for a while before i move? i'm not willing to stay longer than 1-2 years before i move.

3. will graduating from a mississippi school look bad on job applications to ny employers?

4. would acceptance into a bsn or msn program at a new york school increase my chances of getting a job in new york?

5. which hospitals in ny are known to hire new grads? and if they do, would they even consider a mississippi grad?

6. what else can i do to boost my chances of having a successful job search in ny?

any other advice is welcome!!! i miss ny and i want to get back there as soon as i can!!

from what i'm hearing the job market sucks big time in ny big time for new grads.

its tough everywhere but i am constantly hearing from folks back home that it is especially hard there. especially for adn nurses.

you may have to stay put for a while and get some experience in mississippi and get your bsn before you go back to ny.

my mom's friend's daughter graduated from a bsn program almost 2 yrs ago and is still looking for her first rn job in ny . that's why my mom was so scared that i would suffer the same fate. so glad i made the decision to leave ny a few years ago. having said that, its different for each person. you never know how things will play out. its hard to predict the future. however,if i were in your shoes, i'd stay in mississippi and get some experience before moving to ny as well as get my bsn.

The only thing is I feel it's to my disadvantage that I'm applying to hospitals that I've never set foot in when there are a lot of other new grads applying for the same job that have had clinicals or practicum in that hospital. If you do find work in MS, you can always move and will have some experience under your belt. Do you work as a CNA? Sometimes hospitals like to see that experience, too. I don't think a MS school will look bad on a resume unless that school has a terrible reputation for some reason. Good luck

I am here in NYC and am still looking for a job 4 months after passing the bosrds. I would stay put and get experience for at least a year and enroll in an RN to BSN program in the meantime. Good luck.

So I can take the NCLEX in Mississippi but apply for a NY nursing license?

A friend's daughter graduated from an ADN program in Alabama. She took a weeklong trip to NYC right after graduation. While there she was hired contingent she passed the NCLEX. She took and passed the NCLEX in NY.

#3. A grad from Miss must take and pass the same EXACT test a grad from NY does. Only someone totally ignorant would think a local new grad would make a better hire than someone from Miss, simply because of what state they attended school.

I do feel it could be more difficult to walk into any hospital "cold", where no one knows who you are and get a job. Especially with nothing substantial on your resume`. The stuff you mentioned using to pad your resume` helps for school, not so much for a job.

Yes, you can take the test in MS. I took mine in NY and I was registered in CT
