Moving to Manitoba?

I haven't had experience with this, but wanted to say congratulations and good luck! I'm sure others can come and share their experiences :)

Thank you so much, I'm excited to start my career finally. I don't know what working in a developmental centre will be like, hopefully it will lead to me working in mental health later on. Which this sort of is.

I moved to a small town in AB with only a back pack from Toronto. I literally gave everything away and left. However, I am a risk taker and I was more concerned about paying my loans and saving money. That was five years ago.

I am always homesick, but I have made new friends out here. I have no intention of returning to ON. Since then, I have paid my loans, saved enough for grad school and bought a house. The move was not easy, but worth it. I would still be paying loans had I stayed in Toronto.

I have always achieved the goals I set for myself. Think about not what you are giving up, instead consider the possibilities.

I have worked as a staff nurse, unit manager, and most recently, I have transitioned to an educator role. Small town life was very boring, but I worked A LOT and obtained two certifications while living there.

Re: changing registration.

Easy to do. ON will send your registration directly to Manitoba for a small fee. Manitoba will issue a temporary license when they have received and approved all documentation. The process can take 2-3 months. You will need to pay for two licenses this year because for the first year, you are required to be registered in your home Province as well. After the first year, you can pay 57 dollars to ON for non practicing registration there.

I'm from Ontario. I'm expecting to freeze my butt off, thankfully the town is small so I won't be living too far from work. Im planning to hibernate for the winter lol.

Just curious, how did they go about hiring you? Did you have to travel out there,or were they willing to conduct the interview via skype?

I did a phone interview after they offered me the interview. After that, they took a few weeks to hire me then gave me a conditional offer. I have to get a Manitoba license with a few other conditions.

Phone interviews are great because you can wear whatever you want and the person can't make judgments based off your appearance.

Most facilities will do a phone interview. I had a phone interview for both nursing positions. Personally, I would not be willing to fly out and back for an interview at my own expense.

I was just curious because a friend of mine who works in another area of healthcare was hired by Alberta Health Services based on a telephone interview (we're from Ontario), wasn't sure if Nurses were being interviewed in this way as well.

Lol, what exactly makes it so horrible and what are you comparing it to?

I guess for internationally educated nurses, it's a bit more difficult. I haven't encountered any problems but I did get my education in Toronto.
