Moving to Houston

New grad RN in California.

Looking to relocate to Houston since I haven't found a job for a year here. Any tips? Which hospitals to look into? Which ones to avoid? Are there hospitals that will hire new grad without necessarily a "residency" program?

Relocating to Houston

Houston offers a massive job market compared to the competitive landscape in California. The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world. Competition exists, but the sheer volume of facilities works in a job seeker's favor.

Most major health systems in Houston prefer new grads to enter through residency programs. These cohorts usually start in February, July, and October. However, smaller community hospitals or LTAC facilities often hire outside these formal windows. Check the hospitals near you in the Houston area to identify regional centers outside the main medical district.

Major Health Systems

The Big Four dominate the local landscape. Each has a distinct reputation among staff. Research these systems for specific openings:

  • Memorial Hermann: Known for a strong Level 1 trauma presence and high acuity.
  • Houston Methodist: Often cited for high patient satisfaction scores and a more corporate culture.
  • Harris Health System: This is the county system including Ben Taub and LBJ. It provides a challenging, high-volume environment.
  • St. Luke's Health: Part of CommonSpirit, these facilities vary significantly by location.

Licensure and Hiring Reality

Texas is a compact state. Since California is not, the application for a Texas license by endorsement must be a priority. You can find specific requirements through the State Nursing Boards to ensure the paperwork is handled before interviews begin.

Hospitals without formal residencies are often found in the suburbs or specialized surgical centers. Look at HCA Houston Healthcare facilities if a residency is not the goal. They often move faster on hiring than the academic centers in the Medical Center. Be prepared to discuss why the gap since graduation occurred, as a one-year delay will be a primary interview question.

Cost of living will be significantly lower than California. Pay rates are also lower, though there is no state income tax. Review the nursing salaries for the Houston metro area to set realistic expectations for your first offer.
