moving to day shift - question for parents out there

Published

I've always worked night shift, 3x week. I've recently accepted a day shift position, same unit at all. I'm wondering if it was the right decision though. I'm worried I wont' see my kids as much: working nights, I've always been able to pick them up after school, help with homework, and be there for all school events (sacrificing sleep of course). Moving to days, I won't be able to see them everyday after school - or in the evening for that matter, since they spend the night at their dad's house when I work. I decided to give it a try on days since I'm always so tired on my days off. But now I'm having anxiety over not being there for the kids as much. Anyone in similar situation? And how did that work out for you? Thanks!

I have four kids. I've missed plenty of events due to work. They still love me and send me Mother's Day cards.

I'm on night shift and have the same concerns! I'm on the wait list for days, who knows when that will actually happen. I've only been doing nights for about four months but it's really getting to me. I hate how I feel. Good luck and I hope that it works out for you!

RNbubu, don't sweat it. Try it for 6 months, then request to switch back to nights if you need to

We could literally be twins! After 11 years working nights - predominantly on weekends - I am transitioning to 3 12s on weekdays. I've been a zombie and my health has been negatively impacted. I am worried about being gone 3 evenings a week but I know I need to give it a try. I figure they will have their mom back in terms of an awake, alert and hopefully energized person. I have also missed family time on the weekends so I'm hoping it will be an improvement. Like a PP said, you can always try it and go back if you hate it. Best of luck to you!
