Moving to California?

Hi there. I currently hold a UT RN license and my husbands job is relocating us to CA. Has anyone ever moved from another state to CA to become licensed there? Ive heard California says they require pre reqs such as microbiology with a lab before you can get a license there even though I passed the NCLEX and am licensed in another state. My nursing program in UT didn't require microbiology. Just wondering if someone else went through this process and could shed some light on the subject? I can't get ahold of the CA board of nursing and their website doesn't specify. Thanks in advance I am so lost and frustrated

    To my knowledge, you should research "endorsing your UT RN license" to California. The process takes MONTHS to complete.

    I just moved to CA from UT this summer. I went to the U for nursing school, and CA gave me no grief about any of my classes. (I was nervous about a couple of the requirements as well.) It took a little over 2 months from submitting my application to getting my license in the mail. I think your best bet is just to apply, and then see what they say.

    One thing I noticed was that no one wanted to interview me until I had my CA license, so I'd start the process ASAP. Maybe even pay for the temporary license if you need to start working soon...

    CA's BRN doesn't care if the other 49 states plus DC licensed you: they have no problem rejecting anyone for licensure that doesn't meet their requirements...and those requirements are pretty stringent. I can tell you that international applicants definitely need microbio with lab, so I wouldn't be surprised if domestic applicants also do as well.

    There are two ways you can tackle this:

    1. Submit your endorsement application with the transcripts from your nursing program and see if what you have will fly with the BRN. It might, or it might not.

    or

    2. Go to your local community college, take a microbio class with lab, then apply for endorsement.

    As far as contacting the BRN, try e-mail. I've had the best results with email when contacting them.
