Mount Sinai

Published

I have a near chance of getting a job offer at Mount Sinai in Miami, as I interviewed with the recruiter today.

Are there any areas near Miami that are decent but yet not so high in living expenses. THe starting salary for new grads at Mt. Sinai is under $22 and I don't think downtown living will be suitable financially. (incl. my husband)

Please help with this request.

Thank You,

Nurse.

Deep,

I've been in around south Florida quite a bit myself recently because I plan on moving there for grad school next year. I'm afraid you're going to find there's no such thing as 'decent but not so expensive' when it comes to real estate in south Florida. Its one of the hottest real estate markets in the country right now, and whether you're renting or buying you'll have to look real hard to find anything thats decent and cheap. Be very careful of any place in Miami where the rent is real cheap. From what I've seen, its always because the neighborhood isn't so hot, even if the properties themselves don't look run-down. If by "downtown" you mean the Brickell area, forget about finding anything cheap there. Their rents start at around $1500 a month.

Miami is the type of city that you have to drive around and see for yourself what each area is like. There are quite a few decent apartments that you can rent for between $850 to $1000 a month in the western or southern parts of the city like Doral and Kendall, but they're not exactly close to the hospital. Mt. Sinai is on Miami Beach and it would be ideal to find a place on South Beach or in Aventura. Since budget is a concern I would check out Miami Beach first. Aventura would be my first choice, but properties there tend to be a bit more pricey.

Hi there! Hopefully you'll still get this response -since it's been since July...

I wondered what you ended up doing. I will be in your position soon, as soon as I receive my FL license ~March. Then I'll start interviewing. Many people have told me about Mt. Sinai and how great it is. Is it? Did you take the job there? Where did you end up living? I was interested in Kendall...

Kendall is a great area to live in, the only problem is going to be the LONG commute to Miami Beach.

I would recommend that you obtain assistance from an apartment realty agency (that does not charge you.... stay away from those that charge you a fee). Check your local yellow pages and the Sunday newspaper (herald.com).

When I lived in Miami, I found all of my apartment through such realty services and have never been disappointed.

Good luck! :wink2:

You're not there anymore? Where did you work? Any suggestions?

Also, how long is a long commute? I live in the NY Metro area now. I can't imagine any commute longer than what I experience now!

Depending where you live in Kendall (I lived off 88th and 123 Ct, just west of the turnpike entrance) it will be a least a 25 mile drive. Traffic just sucks everywhere. I would estimate at least a 45+ minute drive each way.

I've since moved to Orlando, but I was working for an insurance company in Doral (only 12 miles away). It still took me 45 minutes to get there. I am by no means a slowpoke...trust me! :rotfl: So keep the commute in mind when considering your move.

Billy5949,

i'm not an RN yet, but i'm half-way through my program... more importantly regarding your question, i am from miami beach (have lived in so fla for 25+ years). i did 2 semesters of med-surg clinicals at mt. sinai. i can't really complain about that hospital... it was a very good experience. ratios for the RN's on the floor were typically 5-7 per nurse. they are understaffed, but what hospital ins't? mt. sinai's reputation is really based on cardiac care (for what that's worth). as far as other areas to live and work, i always hear good things about baptist in kendall. if you're thinking about south broward county, i would look into any of the memorial hospitals (i hear very goos things as well). if you'r thinking more north broward (ft. lauderdale and up) i'm not as familiar w/ hospitals up that way, although my mom works for broward general and loves it.

as far as where to live, i would strongly recommend that you live near or in the area where you plan on working. commuting and grid-lock is a huge problem down here. i'll list the hospitals i mentoined and some areas where you might want to consider living (for ease of commute) near each hospital:

mt. sinai: miami beach, downtown miami (at your won risk), north miami beach, sunny isles, aventura, hallandale beach

baptist: kendall (commuting down here is bad even if you're 10 miles from the hospital)

memorial regional: aventura, hallandale beach, hollywood (emerald hills area, or hollywood beach), pembroke pines

broward general: ft. lauderdale (anywhere near downtown), davie, pembroke pines

these are just some suggestions. hope this helps.

Miami Lakes is not so bad, once again the only thing is the traffic, depending on the shift that you will be doing. If you are days and on your way by at least 6.15 you are generally ok, same for going in at night. Provided no road delays of course.

However seems to me Mount Sinai is not paying as well as it did before.

I agree Mercy and Baptist are far more competative.

I live on south beach and it is quite expensive, however people are always looking for roomies especially the travelling nurses.

Check out the board by the cafe and in the ascher building.

Good luck.
