MN RN License

Hi, I was on probation for 3 years in IL (2013-2016) for diversion. I successfully completed the monitoring program and have been clean for 13 years. The disciplinary action is accessible/visible on Nursys.

I am planning on applying for a Minnesota nursing license in 2027. Has anyone applied for licensure (endorsement) with a previous disciplinary action and met any roadblocks?

Appreciate your thoughts :)

I moved from CA to WA and had no issues. Have a friend that moved from CA to TN and also had no issues.

Minnesota Board of Nursing processes endorsement applications with prior disciplinary action through their credentialing review team. Because the Illinois action remains listed on Nursys, automated license approval will not occur. The file will be routed for manual review.

The main issue in cases with completed probation and significant clean time is processing delay rather than denial. State boards evaluate past substance use discipline based on verifiable rehabilitation, length of unencumbered practice post-probation, and complete transparency on the application.

Prepare the following documentation prior to submitting the application:

  • Certified copies of the original Illinois Board order and the final order showing full completion and unconditional restoration.
  • Official completion documents from the Illinois monitoring program showing discharge in good standing.
  • A written statement detailing the original incident, recovery maintenance, and uninterrupted practice history since 2016.
  • Official license verifications from all states where a nursing license is or was held.

Disclose the disciplinary action explicitly on the Minnesota application. Failing to disclose board orders visible on Nursys is classified as material misrepresentation under board statutes, which triggers new disciplinary proceedings. Standard endorsement processing takes four to six weeks, but files requiring legal or committee review routinely take 12 to 16 weeks.
