Hi everyone! I am a new grad who just found out I will be starting a NICU new grad residency program in Jan! I am SO excited, this is exactly what I have wanted to do throughout school and I feel so lucky to be able to start in NICU. Any advice for my first few days? I know I will be taking classes from some of the CNS's in the area.

I currently work at both hospitals (University and Childrens) and here's what I have been told. Since I am currently employed with Childrens they will honor my BSN from DSON regardless of NLN accreditation. University will honor my BSN if my school achieves NLN accreditation within 6 months of my graduation. As of right now DSON is in "candidacy" with hopes to have full accreditation by Oct 2010. Once we are fully accredited both University and Childrens will hire DSON BSN graduates. Hope this helps!

I just received this email today regarding NLN accreditation so I wanted to update people on DSN's status: "Dear Students Staff and Faculty, The National League for Nursing Accreditation Council has announced that Denver School of Nursing has been granted 'Candidacy' status. Candidacy status allows us to proceed with our Self-study report that will be submitted to the NLN in a few months. We are scheduled to have a site survey by NLN reviewers in October of 2010. At that time, reviewers from the NLN will meet with students and faculty to determine if our program meets all of the NLN standards. We look forward to continuing to offer our students a quality education. Thanks goes to our faculty and staff for shouldering the responsibility of offering nursing education that is current, ethical, and at a very high standard."

Hi there, I know this post was from awhile ago but I wanted to reply since no one has. I currently work at Childrens as a unit secretary and I will be doing my senior practicum in the NICU. I would definitely recommend volunteering or getting a job to get your foot in the door. There are a lot of younger nurses working there but there are also a lot of older nurses and you're NEVER too old to become an RN. Have you talked to the manager in the dept you volunteer in? I would say get yourself known by the higher ups (Charge Nurses, Managers) and let them know you are VERY interested in working as an RN there. Good Luck!

They are 2 different accreditations. As I have had it explained to me DSN wanted HLC candidacy before NLN. They are planning on having a MSN program in the near future and HLC is regional accreditation that is required. We were told regional accreditation would be achieved before NLN. Our Dean has stated we have all the paperwork in for NLN candidacy and should have full approval by July. Hope this clarifies!

Halfway done.......hardest quarter so far is 4th. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing after that! Good luck to you!

No problem! I'll let you know when I hear something from her. This quarter (4th) is supposed to be one of the hardest. We have 2 full days of classroom and 3 12 hr days of clinicals. So far it's going well, we're only in the first week of classes. Hoping this quarter goes fast and it will be a blur!!
