I work in a county facility - we have great security presence but the community around us has become increasingly violent - I am struggling with the idea of having armed security (tazers) - anyone out there dealing with this issue? What solutions have you come to?

Mels, I wanted to understand specifically what your question is ... do you mean that your facility is considering equipping security staff with Tazers? Have there been instances of violence within your facility? Instances of violence involving staff walking to their cars?

I work in an urban ER. Our security staff are not armed, but do carry cuffs and are sufficiently generally staffed that they can provide a show of force when necessary. We also have a police response time of less than 3 minutes when necessary.

We have security with the same training as you describe but just the other night there were gun shots fired outside of the ED so yes they want to arm the security officers - we also have good response from our police but you never know is there answer............:uhoh21:

Gunshots fired within 12 blocks of our facility comprise some portion of our trauma patients on any given night ...

Keep your eyes & ears open Mels ... if it stresses you badly enough you'll probably want to think about changing jobs, although random violence can occur anywhere.
