Meditech ORM use for specimens/cultures?

Published

Hi-

Looking for anyone or any facility currently using the ORM module of Meditech for documenting/entering orders for specimens or cultures taken in the OR. I'm currently working the issue for deployment and have hit a crossroads with multiple ways to get it done... just looking to see if anyone has any input on the subject.

We use Meditech for charting in OR and entering orders, what did you want to know? I have only learnt it myself since i started travelling in mid May. :-)

Hi!

I'm curious in your experience how the specimens are documented by the OR staff, and how you designate the exam level (Gross, Gross and Micro, etc) on those specimens, especially if you're doing it electronically.

I'm trying to determine if anyone else has seen or uses Meditech to account for specimens and how the exam orders are done, whether on paper, through OE, and if anyone has seen Meditech autoprint labels for those specimens either through OE or attributes attached to a CDS...

Can you help?

Hi, I dont know what you mean by OE or CDS.. but here is what we do, we go to the "order entry" screen, where we type in "L" for order status, then we punch in the name of pt, then it should automatically put under it the ordering/attending doctor THEN type in "C" for charges for order source. For entering an order for pathology, as we use the same screen for charges and everything else..where it says "category" (when you hit enter after "order source) you type in "PATH" for pathology, then enter key, where it says procedure you type in "SPEC", enter key again, then it should automatically fill out the rest, you keep hitting enter until you go to where it says "preop dx.... procedure" (fill these out according to your data), then hit the enter key until you get to "copy report to DR." if pt has own physician, normally you type in his/her name. You then go down to where you enter the specimen. under the number sign # we usually put in A,B,C or D dpending how many specimens you have. when you hit enter it will go to "Source" , so we enter where the specimen comes from, and then "type" is "H" for histology.. thats it.

I hope i answered your questions.. for culture swabs it different.. we enter

"micro" instead of "Path" we do anaerobe, aerobe, gram stains are normally included in exam.:typing

Do you mind if I ask where you're currently working? Or could you contact whoever supervises the use of Meditech in the OR and ask them to look at this thread? You're giving me a basic picture of what I'm looking for, but there's some background tie-ins that either the facility ORM Super-user, or coordinator, or administrator (pick the appropriate title) could add to this so I understand how fully integrated they have ORM/OE...

Out of curiosity, do you then write on a patient label to identify the specimens?
