Medication error

Published

have a hearing with company next week.reasons I have breached medication policy and nmc code( I have popped medication for two people and I forgot one pot in the room of first one, night duty found it and reported). That day I had to be removed of medication and do carer job. But then they found that was leaving early and coming late on shift cause I hadn't had break and was taking care of my boyfriend's boys as he was at night shift. Then they suspended me.My senior was ok with it and all staff and always had prepared my handover papers before I leave. But I hadn't had arrangements with manager. To mention the medication I forgot was found on the first client's room I went but was not taken so no harm. All my records are clear never had made error and everyone can say how hard working person I and always to support all the units. I've suspended for almost a month cause of these. I am aware of my mistakes but was working under stress which now I'm having counselling.

am I going to loose my job? I'm scared

I hope that you have learned from your experience. Just because you feel that a mistake was unimportant doesn't make it so. It really doesn't matter what a hard worker you are if you are not a safe worker and you are not at work when you should be.

None of us here can predict if you'll be able to keep your job, however it doesn't seem likely.

Uhh, yeah. I'm not going to sugarcoat it; those aren't errors. You knew that they were wrong and yet you did them anyways.

1. You pulled medication for two people at the same time.

2. You left medication unattended in a room.

3. That unattended medication wasn't even for the person in the room.

4. You think this wasn't serious because the patient didn't take it. "no harm"

I'm not even going to touch the fact that you were coming late and leaving early. I don't care that you were watching your boyfriend's kids and I'm sure that the manager doesn't either.

You can take two paths from here. You can either continue making excuses for all of the wrongs you did or you can grow up and make serious changes right now. Frankly, I'm surprised that they just suspended you, because from what you said, I believe you will be fired.

I am aware of my mistakes and that there are going to be consequences.

i would never make the same mistakes again and I would never put my clients life at risk. I care about these people. Unfortunately I suffer with anxiety and I know that's not an excuse but it is mt fault as well that I did not seek for help sooner. I prepared that dismissal is more likely but we are also humans. I would definitely be be grateful if I had another chance and would undertake any requirements my employer will ask me.

That's what you need to tell them ... that you know you were wrong -- that you will never do it again -- that you will accept whatever punishment or re-education they decide to give you -- and then hope they will give you another chance. That's all you can do.

The medication error is one problem. Whatever counseling you receive on this, is separate from.. "leaving early and coming late on shift ."

Your anxiety and stress means NOTHING to the powers that be. Do not use that as an excuse, It will only work against you.
