Hey all, I had my first med practical and I missed a question, which we are not allowed to do. I was giving lopressor 50mg and a stat order was listed on the bottom of my work sheet lopressor 25mg.stat. So I didnt give the stat because I had already given the med at 50mg, because I said that I would confer with the doctor letting him know that I already gave the med at 50mg are you sure I should give it at 25 as well? We have been lectured over and over to question anything we feel necessary because we are ultimately responsible, yet I miss it on a test!! She didnt make me retake it thank god, But it was a horrible experience waiting in the hall for an hour with everyone who did fail it and crying! What do you guys think, shouldnt you make sure the doc knows he already ordered it and make sure he wants a loading dose before you give it? These tests are so far from reality!

I would have checked with my drug book before I called the Dr. Mine says that usual po dose is 25-100 mg/day as a single dose or a divided dose. So I would have given it. Are you allowed to check your drug book?
we are not allowed to use any books so I couldnt check. Thank god we are allowed to miss one question. I just felt like they were trying to trick us, this is my first semester, 101, and we never discussed this issue in lab.
We have a drug book on the med cart we test out on. We are not allowed any mistakes. Our instructors would have marked it wrong if we called the DR and it wasn't needed-or if we gave it and we shouldn't have. I would have questioned the additional dose also if not allowed to check with a drug book-I don't have any usual doses memorized.

Not so far from reality. I have had patients who get, let's say, 50 mg Lopressor bid but the pts BP/pulse remained elevated, there have been stat x1 orders for an additional 25 mg Lopressor.
That wouldnt be something we would know at this point, especially trying to give meds from a med sheet without being allowed to look them up. It doesnt make sense to teach it this way when they preach to look up all your meds. We have only covered ASA, acetaminophen, warfarin and lasix in class. Despite my error, I got validated and will be giving meds wednesday at clinical. I will be looking up every single med just so that I can learn them. Especially sense we do not have a pharmacology class in this RN program. YIKES!
I'm taking an online pharm class offered by our school. It is pass/fail so it helps me learn, but is not very stressful.
