Math Problem that I need help with

Published

I can not figure this one out and I need your help

Order to infuse 200 ML of Dextrose at rate of 10/Hr. Available tubing is micro drip --- How many gtts/min do you adjust for?

Can you list the steps in how to do this problem.

Thanks.

I hope this is what you are looking for sorry if it confuses you.

200ml at 10ml/hr= 20 hours.

1 hour = 60 minutes therefore:

10ml x 60gtts = 600gtts

60min ml 60min divide 600 by 60 and you get 10gtts/min

The ml's cancel out in the multiplication leaving you with drops per minute. Or if you want to get really fancy the ml's cancel out and the 60's can cancel out and that would leave you with 10gtts/min.

you have to know that microdrip tubing has a drop factor of 60 drops/ml. you will also need a conversion factor of 1 hour = 60 minutes.

10 ml/1 hour
(infusion rate)
x 60 drops/ml
(drop factor of iv tubing)
x 1 hour/60 minutes
(conversion factor)
=
10 gtts/minute
(drip rate)

I really appreciate the replies. I had no idea how to work this out, and it might show up on my final Thursday. Thanks Again!

i suggest you pick one or more of the medication tutorials listed on post #2 of this sticky thread and work through one of them: https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/nursing-math-thread-264395.html - the nursing math thread. good luck on your final.
