Hi everyone!
I am am a nurse currently on maternity leave. I'm due to return to work in February and I am having severe anxiety over it. I actually registered during my leave, so I haven't ever worked as a fully qualified nurse - I left as a pre-reg. By the time I return I will have been away for almost nine months and I am so afraid that I will be an awful nurse/ forget how to do my job/ be anxious about leaving baby etc.
I would really appreciate advice if there are any nurses out there who are willing to help!

I was actually in a similar situation. I got pregnant right after nursing school (like literally 2 weeks after finishing) and by the time I started working as an RN I was already 5 months pregnant. Between new hire orientation and the didactic part of training, I was only able to work on the floor for about 6 weeks before going on maternity leave. I didn't return to work until almost 9 months later and I'm at a new facility, in a new specialty.
It has definitely been tough adjusting to being back to work but it's doable. I would advise you to watch some videos (YouTube) of basic nursing skills like Foley catheter insertion, spiking bags, priming lines, etc. Also just be open to what ever happens. Be patient and try not to be too hard on yourself. Everything will come back to you eventually as you get into a groove.
I definitely have those days where I start to question if I am cut out to do this but they are happening less and less as time goes on. I've been back to work for 2 months now.
For me, the hardest part is leaving my daughter each morning, lol. I have confidence that you will be fine. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Good luck!
Thank you so much for your feedback! It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one who feels/felt like this!
I'm so glad that it's getting easier for you, I know it is going to be so hard to leave my little man. That is a great idea to watch the YouTube vids, I'm going to start that straight away - anything to help me get back in to it!
Thank you so much! :-)
