how many hours?

i was looking at traveling some time in january 2008. i want to know if you take an assignment, are you only able to work 36 hours a week. or can you put into your contract that you want to work 4 12 hours shifts. also, are you able to sign up for extra shifts at that facility in different dept(ex: working in ICU per your contract, facility needs someone to work a sat/sun midnoc on the medical floor) are you able to sign up and work this??..thanks ahead of time.

I usually work a 48 hr. week when I travel because this is the norm of the agency set up. I'd rather have a 36 hr. week but that isn't always possible. I am right now working local agency per diem and just got off of a 26 week contract. I'm enjoying the freedom, trust me to be able to book myself. I feel like I just got out of jail lol!!! I can work my own schedule. I need 2 days/week to more than make my bills, thank goodness!

It depends on the facility and the agency.

Some contracts specify that you must do extra shifts. Other facilities do not want to pay the highly expensive charges for traveler OT, and request that you get permit from the manager to do so. It is best to feel out in the interview what the policy is.
