Making the most of orientation

Hi Everyone,

I am orienting to a new LTC lpn charge nurse position soon.I have two weeks tops to familiarize myself with this new facility, and it will probably actually be less time realistically.Does anyone have any tips on optimizing my orientation?

Thank you

Congrats on your new position!

Get to know key phone numbers and write them down (dietary, admissions, pharmacy). Likewise, try to meet face to face with the key players as your success depends on teamwork. Key players can range from those in authority to the most influential nursing assistant.

Find out how to look up policies and procedures, so you have a ready resource when questions arise. Make sure you understand the chain of command so you know who to contact for help/advice when needed.

Best wishes! :)

Are you new to LTC or nursing? If not, I say two weeks is a super orientation.

As above, get to know your physical layout, phone numbers and who does what and where.

Familiarize yourself with the nurses station...files, binders, charts etc.

Keep a note book and jot down notes.

Get involved. Instead of just watching the nurses do things...ask to do it.
