Hello, All
I would like to know which organization is representing the nurse practitioners. I have read about the American College of Nurse Practitioner as well as the American Academhy of Nurse Practitioners. Are these organizations and others represent the profession? If so, why is it so fragmented? Is there a main organzation that represent all of the nps?
Ok, let me begin by stating the following:
1. As a nurse practitioner, do you choose what organization represent you as a whole group?
2. I saw many subgroups that represents the specialities of the nurse practitioners. Does everyone join the sub-group and not a main one?
3. It seems to me, that everyone is spread out, fragment and disorganized within the organizations. Do you see it like I do? If not please explain.
4. How can two organizations represent the group of NP's equally? and How does everyone feel ab out them? DO you feel they are doing an exceptional work separately?
5. What happens if they join as one? Would it work or not?
6. What organization have you join as a np? and Why?
In conclusion, I am just confuse as everyone who is looking for information about NPs. It makes the NPs look like they are unorganize, fragment, and no concept of a whole within the profession of NPs. Everyone should be a part of the organization as well as the sub-groups. Hmm, why should each sub-group be have the participation and no to less participation of selecting one organization to represent the group as a whole? Can someone explain it to me? It seems every orgainization wants to be in charge and no soldiers to follow or be thin out and nothing is accomplish. CXan you see my view point? As I see those selecting to be involve in certain activities and groups? Therefore, why not pull everyone together under one umbrella and still maintain the specialty groups?
Jumping off the soap box and it is time for bed.
Have a safe and pleasant day/evening everyone.....

I'm not sure what other organization you are talking about unless you are talking about local or specialty groups like those for peds or geriatrics.
Also - bear in mind that NP isa relatively new profession - we have only had about 20-30 years to get things started, things are still evolving. Some local orgs are very well organized, others are not so organized...
Oh - Most belong to more than one.
I belong to three - local, state and national, and then I willprobably join a specialty organization at some point I'm sure.

Hello, Gauge
What organization is the national? and the state? What is the position of the American College of NP and are they consider the national organization, too?
Thanks,
ACNP Is another national organization - just like nursing, medicine. engineering, banking and a host of other industries - there are many organizations. Some are for profit and their aim is to make a buck - some are not for profits and they exist to serve their members. I don't know which org does what, that's something you sort of have to feel out for yourself.
Some organizations offer their own certifying exams too.
Medicine's best known org is the AMA, however there are literally HUNDREDS of others!

Thank you for the information about the organizations and how it is precieve by the members. I agree that numerous of organizations can be form and given the status of local, state, and national. Also, some of the organizations can work with the members as well as work against the members or can be for profit/non-profit as you pointed out in your post. Therefore, it is good to have an a main organization who is non-profit to represent the members.
However, it is important to join different sub-groups such as state, local and speciality to acquire as much information on each level and within your speciality. It is important to keep updated on the new information that being disperse from all levels as a np. Therefore, joining a variety of groups can be a positive thing for our profession.
I just do not like the false preception of disorganization and frament that others may view the our profession. For example, I sat in a physician assistant class, the class were comparing pa vs np and they tore up the np's profession in their reports. They made it sound that the nps had no ideal what was going on in their profession. I did not like it at all and I spoke up. I could not sit there and listen to the arrogance of these non-medical students speaking about the np profession. I try to explain to them my thoughts and they did not accept it at all. Therefore, appearance is very import cause it can make us or break us and give the wrong impression to others.
Thanks again and hopefully I can show the positive points of the profession as you and others.
Friends,
