magnet status

thanks in advance...

i graduated from an ACEN/NLNAC accredited school in Florida... I am a California resident/native.

i wanted to get a BSN or MSN... i was talking to a buddy of mine the other day and... she mentioned "magnet status"... i need to enroll in a school that has this "status"... what is that?

i plan to attend WGU (Western Governors University) for that BSN/MSN... is it CCNE accredited and online... what the heck is a magnet status nursing program?

Magnet status facilities usually seek BSN graduates. Probably miscommunication

Magnet status is for hospitals, not for schools. It's a certification that is actually falling out of fashion, but one of the stipulations is that most of the nurses in the facility have BSNs.

Falling out of fashion? What makes you say that?

I can't say that it's falling out of fashion, but magnet status definitely increases politics, financial micromanagement from all tiers, more surveyors etc. My facility is magnet, those who've been around prior stated they were happier and felt that resources were not much of an issue. Could be the economy taking its toll til today, not too sure which has a larger impact.

The slew of hospitals not reapplying for it as their terms are up. It was the new status thing, but it's lost a lot of its meaning over time. Check out posts in the General Nursing forum, lots of topics about this.

from what i understand, it is the actual hospital with this "magnet" status... so she meant, i have to attend a program that has some sort of relationship with a hospital that has a magnet status?

does this person know what she is talking about?

Your run on sentences are somewhat difficult to follow. In the end, no, your friend does not know what she/he is talking about. Again, magnet status is facility designated, and are more likely to hire BSN graduates. School and hospital relations are not directly associated in regards to this status. Maybe you should do a Google search to further understand what magnet status implies.
