I find it very frustrating. That LPNS are being used as CNAS. Is this everywhere or just wisconsin?

What type of setting do you work in and what state are you practicing in? I've been an LPN for going on 5 years now and im in RN school and i've worked Med/Surg and as charge nurse at two skilled nursing facilities and I have never once been treated like a CNA or given an assignment similar to theirs....that is terrible that they're doing that to you And I assume when u say being "given CNA work" you mean beds, baths etc?? LPN's generally are giving meds all day...You'll have to go into a bit more detail for me to give you a more thorough answer but that is very strange and I would be frustrated as well. You didn't go to CNA school, you went to nursing school therefore you want do do nursing! I get what your saying 100 percent but the biggest majority of nurses forget that true, real nursing care is beds, baths, bedpans, etc. That is basic nursing so its not to say your not doing "nursing" but your not getting to utilize the skills you just worked your butt off to learn and you want to use them!! But yes, fill me in a little bit more on why the nurses are doing only CNA work..

In Pittsburgh, an Lpn can work in a hospital, can with as an "advanced patient care technician". Basically a Cna that can do foleys and I think draw blood/start IVs. You could also be a RN student or an experienced Cna and get this job. Pays around 12$ an hour.
Lpns are still used as nurses in ltc and home health.
I live in wisconsin. i work at a hospital. i started out here as a cna. then a nurse tech. then got my LPN. i took my boards passed the first time i have been an LPN since 2009. when i first got my lpn they trained me on different units. and then after a year they started utilizing me as a cna. its really frustrating. i am thankful i have a job i have been here 7 years. the only reason i stay here is because the pay is decent. its 23.18 an hour. so i am basically getting paid to do cna work and i feel like im loosing my nursing skills. some coworkers are respectful and acknowledge i am an lpn and sometimes i can pass meds but most of the time its cna work. im currently doing the lpn to rn online school through excelsior but its expensive. ive heard bad things about the clinicals like everyone fails. Do u know anyone who has done this program? any input would be much appreciated

At many LTC facilities where I have worked, in times of short staffing LPN/LVNs have worked as CNAs to fill in the gaps. They are not forced to do this and usually welcome the chance to do direct care at their LPN/LVN rate of pay. No disrespect is implied or taken.
