LPN scope of practice for VA

Published

Is anyone here a nurse in VA? I would like to know what a lpn is allowed and not allowed to do. I have looked through the VA state board website but did not find any helpful information. It would be great if anyone could help me out here. Thanks

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

Your best bet is to read the State Board laws that describe what an LPN can and cannot do. The rest of it will vary in facilities.

Specializes in LDRP.

Well, I'm not an LPN, but I am in Virginia. I've been told different things. I've been told that LPN's can't hang blood, can't be charge nurse, can't do IV push meds, can't do admission assessments. Of course, I dont know if this is for the whole state or just the hospital system I'm at.

The VA has different Step and Grade levels for LPNS, depending on your past experience. Imagine my surprise when I started almost 2 yrs ago. I indeed could not do an admit assessment as I was not an LPN 6 although I had been doing them for years elsewhere. I have since obtained my grade 6 level after becoming IV certified. Thanks to the training I received here. The VA in my experience is a good place to further your education and they encourage continuing education also. This was a good career move on my part. If you have any further questions feel free to contact me at [email protected] for further info. And by the way no we cannot work in a charge position.
