LPN then RN

Hi everyone,

I want to know what you all think of becoming an LPN before an RN. Schools for getting a BSN are really expensive, even with loans I still can't afford it all. I've been in school for about 3 and a half years doing pre-requisites at a CC and I am kind of in a slump. I really want to start getting experience and working as a nurse. This is my last semester doing the pre-requisites and I'm hoping to start an LPN program next semester. I'm not too sure where to go from here or if it's worth it.

If I do pursue my LPN, I expect to work for a few years at least before going back to school to get my BSN. What are your comments or opinions about this?

    Hello,

    The track you follow is really up to you. However, I feel necessary to make a distinction after reading your post.

    1) LPN and RN are two different licenses.

    2) An LPN student earns a diploma or certificate in order to sit for the NCLEX-PN.

    3) An RN student earns an ASN degree in order to sit for the NCLEX-RN. You may choose to advance your career and degrees with a BSN, MSN, and up-to a doctorate degree.

    It all takes time, effort, and money... however, it is not a competition (as all roles are needed in society). You should pursue what is right for you.

    As for me, I decided to go for the ASN to get my RN license and immediately signed up for the BSN degree at a local college while I worked full-time. I plan on working for a while before I go back to school for a graduate degree (MSN). Others continue going to school while working until they reach their desired goal.

    I recommend you set yourself some short-term goals and work towards them as you can. Hope this helps. Cheers!

    I started as an LPN and moved forward from there. I think not enough people consider it to get their career started.

    This is also a helpful post as I was told that I should possibly consider going for my LPN and then working towards my RN and then BSN in that regard! I just posted for the first time on here moments ago about my desire to become a nurse but am not sure if ADN to get my RN and then immediately sign up for a BSN is a good idea. I live in CT and it seems that BSN is the way to go but I cannot possibly stop working - not working and paying for school is just not in the cards for my financial situation. I wish you the best!
