LPN to RN

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hi,

I was just accepted to an LPN program that starts in August, my ultimate goal is to beocome an RN. Does anyone know approx. how much more course work is required to go from LPN to RN. I know you need an AS degree in Nursing. I already have a BA (but in psychology). Also, is it easier to get into an RN program as an LPN, I had a hard time getting into an RN program with just my CNA certification.

Thanks,

Cam'sMom,

Wish I could help but I'm a newbie. What school are you attending? I'm leaning towards an LPN program myself. I may be moving to Mass. Craig.

Specializes in Psychiatric Adolescent.

I recently graduated from UMass Amherst after first practicing as an LPN for 20 years...GOT NO CREDITS WHATSOEVER for LPN education or experience, and believe me I did try. However, I hear that there are associate degree programs that do give LPN credits towards the degree. I believe Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA is such a program. Also, there is an online ADN program that is tailored specifically for LPN's. I have a friend who is taking it right now, but I don't know much of anything else about it. :uhoh3: AND I JUST TOOK MY NCLEX YESTERDAY!!!!! :uhoh3:

Hey, I just noticed that you have a BA in psych...the program I graduated from at UMass was a 2nd BA in Nursing Program...It took only 1.5 years for me to get my BSN cuz of a previous degree I had in an unrelated field. Don't go to LPN school when you've already got most of the credits you'll need for a BSN!!! You don't need any previous health care experience either...I was the only person in my class had previous nursing experience. Go the this website to find out more: http://www.umass.edu/nursing/programs/pro_ug_second_bach/ug_secondary.html

Cam'sMom,

i graduated from Northern Essex CC n Lawrence...great program, and new LPNs get to move into nursing 2 or 3, depending on other credits..not far from Billerica, either...also checck out Rivier in Nashua...

That online program for LPN's to ADN is out of Albany,NY and is called Excelsior (formerally Regents). Google it and see what you can come up with. I FOUND OUT THAT PASSED MY NCLEX-RN!! But, there is one problem...I keep writing LPN once and a while

I am in a little different situation than you as I don't have a BA in another field but I looked at 3 different schools in my area (south shore of Boston) and found it to actually be quicker and less pre-reqs to do LPN then bridge to RN at least at Quincy College. The LPN is 10mths full time (30hrs week) and then there are some classes you need in order to bridge at quincy and then the LPN to RN bridge part time is 1 year. The full time RN program at the same school is 2 years. The difference was there was NO WAITING LIST for the LPN. I took the NET got my results filled out my application and got an acceptance letter in 2 weeks. The RN program is filled until Fall 2006 (f/t).

The other 2 RN programs in the area don't give you credits per se but you get to skip to Nursing 2 or 3 depending. I think they start you at nursing 2 but you can challenge it.

I had a really tough time deciding on which route to take but because of my financial obligations, this worked out perfectly. I start in Sept.
