LPN to RN

Published

What happens if your are in a program that 3 semesters in you can become an lpn, but after that semester your a RN. Can you still temporarily keep your lpn job if you became a RN while working as a LPN or do you have to quit right away and find RN employment?

The answer to your question depends on the state where you work, as well as the policies of your employer.

I was working as an LVN at a nursing home when I received my RN licensure in 2010. I continued to work for the same employer as an LVN for a month while simultaneously licensed as an RN. I resigned once I found an RN position elsewhere.

However, some employers will force the LPN/LVN to resign once he/she has the RN license because, "Sorry...we have no RN positions available, and we disallow having nurses working below their current levels of licensure."
