Low HESI score

So I took my HESI and scored a 73.6%. My GPA is 3.25 my school doesn't have an exact cut off of what you have to make to get accepted. It's ranked on your pre req grades and the HESI I made As in AP 1&2 lab and a B in AP 1&2 lecture.

What sucks is I can't re take the test till next year when the application opens again.

Look at the data points objectively. Anatomy and Physiology lab grades demonstrate strong practical mastery. Lecture grades show solid foundational knowledge with B marks. A 73.6 percent on the entrance examination is lower than desired, but admission decisions in ranked programs depend on the exact weight assigned to each component.

What specific sub-scores lowered the composite HESI result? Standardized nursing entrance examinations measure reading comprehension, vocabulary, mathematics, and science reasoning. Pinpointing whether the deficit was in general test logic, math speed, or science recall will dictate how to approach future preparation.

Waiting an entire cycle before a retake feels discouraging, but that time can serve a clear purpose. Focus on these steps to prepare for the next cycle:

  • Request an advising appointment with the nursing department to review how the selection committee weights the HESI score against prerequisite grades.

  • Obtain a detailed score report to identify weak topic areas for targeted remediation.

  • Consider working as a nurse aide or patient care technician to build clinical context that aids critical thinking.

  • Establish a regular study schedule using NCLEX-style question banks to practice test-taking logic.

A single test score reflects performance on one day, not the capacity to learn nursing care. Identify the gap, adjust the study plan, and systematically address the deficit before the next application deadline opens.
