lost in rn to bsn programs with prior ba

Published

hi everyone,

i`m trying to figure out my options for further education and i`m kind of lost in the american education system. so, this is my situation: i was a nurse in Berlin, Germany (where i am from) worked for several years in a trauma-ER, then i fell in love with a cowboy and moved to Texas (ok, that` s maybe another story). Anyway, so i got my German RN License transferred to a Texan RN license which is a "diploma" as far as I understand. I also graduated College in Germany in "communication design" (BA), which has nothing to do with nursing, but still is a BA. Now I`m wondering how to get my RN BSN? Is that a so called "accelerated" program due to my prior BA or because I' m a RN already? I`m looking for an online school to become a RN BSN. Knowing my background, do I still need to go to school for 2+ years or are there quicker options? Any input or guidance is appreciated. thank you all

Since you have an RN license in Texas, you need to complete an RN to BSN program. Accelerated programs are for people with bachelors in another field that are entering nursing school.

Thank you, sailornurse. Can I complete a RN to BSN program with a diploma (instead of an ADN)?

Yes, there are many universities that let you do an RN to BSN without having your ADN, it will just require more credit hours of general education study. I would start by making a list of schools most appealing to you, and then contact them and find out about credits transferring from your BA; most don't have any limits on free electives, but I'm not sure how it works if your degree was conferred in another country. You'd have to ask the academic advisors at the schools you're considering about that.

You already have transferred your German RN License to a Texan RN License. Step one is clear.

All you need to do now is apply to a school for their RN to BSN program. The academic advisor will let you know how many credit hours they will accept from your BA.

Good Luck
